What You Might Not Know About Owning a Company (and Succeeding) Owning and running a business is not for the faint-hearted. There are sacrifices to be made. Some obvious and some less so. It suits individuals who are a little bit mad, don’t like being told what to do, are ambitious, driven and control freaks â€" to begin with at least. No-one can do “it” better Or so you think. When you are building a business from scratch, you are either on your own or working with a small team of fellow Partners. At some point though, you are going to have to make your first hire. Pity the poor soul who is the first to join as an employee because the level of scrutiny they will be subjected to will likely be intense. Owners of small organically grown businesses are far more likely to “micro manage” than most and it takes a long while to appreciate that actually, someone can do “it” as well or even better, just maybe not in the same way! Financial insecurity It is a common misconception that the Boss earns the most in the company or is financially secure. Quite often the Boss earns less than the other Executives because he/she is taking the hit on their salary in the hope they can cash out at a later date. If you are asked to visit your boss’s house, don’t be surprised to see peeling wall paper and carpets that resemble something from the 1930’s. You see, they might say they are re-investing everything into the business and many do. Not all, but many! Sleep deprivation Start getting used to the sleepless nights. Gone is the uninterrupted sleep of yesteryear, to be replaced by an overactive mind analysing anything and everything that you should be thinking about in the office. Once the business owner has become an old hand, he/she will realise the futility of endless tossing and turning and get up to make a cup of tea and do some work to put his/her thoughts on paper and in turn rid the restless mind of its unwanted interlopers. Only then is sleep possible again. Business owners rarely get away from their business completely, even on holiday. Sadly, downtime will continue to become an even rarer commodity because of the competitive landscape we work in. You make  a difference Having highlighted some of the less attractive parts of running your own business, now for a very attractive one! Freedom. Freedom to make decisions â€" some good and some bad, freedom to take time off when you want to, freedom to work the hours you desire, the freedom of not being told what to do and the pleasure of creating something out of nothing, making your indelible mark on the commercial landscape. Responsibility too â€" the responsibility and happiness that is gained from providing others with a well-paid job and a great company culture which means people are excited when they come to work every day. Never under-estimate the importance of “making a difference” to the business owner â€" quite often it is the biggest motivator, regardless of whether it was at the outset. You create the market For those company owners operating in a certain space, the ability to re-create or shape a market is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job. It takes creativity and foresight, but if you are able to find a way of doing more efficiently or more cost effectively than your predecessors, then great. The only thing is â€" it is a bit like tinkering with an apple crumble. Only recreate something if the result is going to be better than the original! With a dozen equally hot, smart and funny women in a limo, cruising from club to club, she rang in her personal new year getting smashed. She was ripe for it, since she is almost always the designated driver. What happens in text, doesnt always stay only on your phone Who knew this typically suited up, buttoned down professional could ride a mechanical bull that way? Who knew she was a former gymnast and could easily ace the can-you-pole-dance challenge? She used her smart phone to help those of us who couldn’t make it, enjoy the show. She captured her hi-jinks in photos, and texted them with a hysterical running commentary of what she was doing â€" and what she was thinking. Smart phones are not so smart Unfortunately, it turned out she really wasn’t thinking. And, the phone? Turned out it isn’t so smart. Guess who got the texts, along with her inner circle, the crowd of would-be revelers rooting her on? A client. Enough said. Did you have that sinking feeling in your stomach? Have you done it? The service is aptly described by its tagline, “Nothing good happens online after 1 a.m.” Before you can Facebook or Tumblr away your dignity, the service intervenes with a short test â€" like typing the alphabet backwards â€" to block or unblock your access to your reputation. Self-esteem and searching for a job Everybody is talking about how importance self-confidence is when it comes to finding a job; and yes it very important. But … One thing that people don’t talk about is that during that tough journey of finding a job, you will face rejections, disappointments and many bad days, things that will damage your self-esteem. So, it really makes no sense telling someone that developing self-confidence will get him/her a job, because the road is all about lowering self-esteem. A mean boss, an aggressive co-workers and a tough competition, and before we can really find our place and be able to really “have that job”, we need to make sure that those events won’t hurt our self-esteem. In this article, we’re going to discuss some of the things that can damage your self-esteem and how to deal with them; we’re going to talk about rejection and inferiority. 1.Rejection: Yes it hurts badly! In fact, it’s one of the things that we fear the most, and it can leave us with zero self esteem. Why rejection hurts badly? Whether in our personal or professional life, we hate it! And maybe that’s because it makes us feel like we’re not “good enough” and that we’re not “up to standards”. Maybe deep within us we don’t want to feel “unloved” or “unwanted”, and that’s why we fear rejection, and also why our self-esteem is affected. But in fact, in the real world, if we’re serious about success and living a better life, we can’t let rejection control us, because anyway, it’s unavoidable. Wait! Is it unavoidable? Yes it’s, it’s like death! No matter how great you’re, you’re going to come across people who are not interested in what you have, and also you’re going to come across jealous people who will envy you. So, we have to realize this fact, the only way to avoid rejection is to do nothing, and even then, some people will reject you because you’re not productive!! And this fact leads us to another important fact, which is: great people get rejected too, famous people got rejected, just look deep within their biography and you will find out that their glory was build up on rejections and failure. Inferiority: Inferiority can be a good thing, in fact some theories suggests that it’s what makes babies become capable adults, as they find themselves in a place where everybody outperforms them, so they feel inferior and as a result grow. But there’s one kind of inferiority that’s very dangerous, and it usually comes from three major sources: The person already feels bad about him/her self, and as a result, always looks for what’s wrong with him/her, and thus always finds other people better than him/her, even if they’re not. Unfair comparison: if you’re comparing your basketball skills with Micheal Jorden’s skills, then you’re not being fair with yourself at all. Inferiority mixed with helplessness: imagine that little babies feel inferior to us, but yet they feel helpless, feeling like they can’t do anything, that’s a perfect recipe for failure and emotional pain. These feeling of inferiority can damage your self-esteem, so stopping these thoughts and adopting a new way of thinking is the key to save your self-esteem, especially during the tough times of finding a new job. So, how do I do that? In my guide to build self confidence, I talked in depth about perceptions and beliefs and how they affect self confidence, these negative thoughts are nothing but distorted beliefs and perceptions, and to make sure that you don’t let the feelings of inferiority affect you, you first need to be aware of the three points mentioned above. After that, you need to start questioning and challenging the “bad thoughts”, for example, if you’re feeling like you’re not good enough, then you need to start to challenge those thoughts and realize that they’re not true (YES THEY’RE NOT TRUE). Also making sure that you don’t become helpless, no matter what, if you can’t do something now, you go and learn how, you practice it until you master it, there’s nothing that you can’t learn. With such beliefs, inferiority will become a motivation, because you don’t have bad seeds in your head like the ones discussed above. And also rejection won’t hurt you because you know that you can become better as time goes on. An action plan: Write down the good trait that you have (maybe just the fact that you’re searching for a job) And every time you find yourself in a situation where you start to feel bad while searching for a job, or more specifically feeling bad because of the things mentioned above (rejection and inferiority), I want you to do the next: Start questioning your thoughts right away with all the tips mentioned in this article, and refuse to tie your worth with your job, all that while knowing that you’re already have great abilities, and remind yourself of your good traits (review your list of great traits, at least you’re trying o find a job, and if you think you have none, you have to open your eyes wider). As simple as that, even the smallest tweaks can build up overtime and get you in a different place eventually, don’t ever let anything to make you feel like you’re less important or less capable. You need to SPEAK UP in your job search! Today I wanted to share with you the importance of having an opinion and a strategy in your job search. I often have to discuss with my clients how crucial it is to have a plan while in career transition. You have to be prepared for everything that comes your way so that you can have the confidence you need to land a job. This is especially true once you are in the interviewing process. For example, my career coaching client Paul in California recently shared with me that when he’s in an interview he often gets nervous, does not speak up and does not voice his opinion. He knows that this is not good because they can’t evaluate him as an employee if he does not speak up. Having an opinion and something to say in the interview process helps the employer know how you think and how you would handle situations as an employee. Don’t try to just please the interviewer, the prospective employer, or someone you are trying to network with. It does take some balance. You dont want to come off as rude or try to control the conversation. Be respectful, be relaxed and be yourself, so that you can show them what you really have to offer.
